Name: Day Diaz | Business/Profession: Owner & Contract, J & D Home Improvement

Please share a little about your background, personally and/or professionally.

I’m originally from Puebla, Mexico. Grew up in North Little Rock and graduated from NLR High School in 2012. I have worked in the service industry for many years until I took a turn into construction starting with ceramics. After that, I moved to Cabot in 2015 and it took me to a new, different place in life. Which let me to my beautiful family, my kids and a supportive husband who decided to take the same path as me and open J & D Home Improvement LLC.

Please share about your business, where it’s located, and what led you to starting it.

We are located in Cabot and work in Central Arkansas and surrounding areas. It all started by doing pressure washing and adding soft washing services and getting classes to do it right. Our customers started asking about other services, and we performed after realizing that we could involve our friends and other business who are more experienced on other things we couldn’t. That was the moment everything else was coming together: the painting , flooring and more, until I realized that theres more problems other than just cosmetic, which turn into getting to the studs “literally.” I began noticing that I needed to get the problem resolved from the beginning, which made me realize I needed to be a contractor and get my license to do what I love.

What goals do you hope to achieve for your business during your time in VCWoman Achieve?

My goal is to learn and use the resources I can available to what I do. Learn from others who been through this process or similar and take my business to a different level while being able to keep providing jobs for my employees and subcontractors. My major goal is to become a builder and make affordable housing for many families while giving back to my community by making a safe space for people in need of help to create a better life and their families.

What drew you to being part of a mentorship group specifically curated for non-men? How has being a woman or non-binary individual impacted your journey as an entrepreneur?

What motivates me about this program is that I am in an industry dominated by man and it is hard but I am not a person to give up. This discourages me sometimes because of the same reasons I am left of the table 90% of the time. One thing I know for sure is that I am going strong until I make my goals a reality.

What are three things you enjoy doing outside of work?

I love nature, while I can take a good hike I also enjoy fishing and boating. I like to create and customize so I am making designs for homes depending on the job asked. And l love spending time with my family and church family.

What is your favorite part about being an entrepreneur?

My favorite part is that there’s a bad part most of the time, but the opportunity to resolve it and make someone happy at the end result, makes me happy that I was able to accomplish the task.
