We are so excited to introduce you to an ongoing series where we celebrate the success and achievements of the amazing members of Woman Achieve. Meet Debi Barns one of our mentors!

The Venture Center: What inspired you to participate in this program?

Debi Barns:

When I decided to start my own company I went to a conference to learn more about the industry I was entering.  While there, I met an amazing women in her early 70’s who was a leader in the field, a well-known author, speaker and business woman.    I timidly approached her to introduce myself, and she was so gracious.  I will never forget what she said, “Debi, I’ve been blessed to be successful in this field for over 50 years.  I feel my purpose now is to help other young women be successful, and I would be happy to help you.”  She became my friend and my mentor until she died two years ago at the age of 82.  She made such an impact on me with her advice and counsel.   She was my inspiration to “pass it forward” through mentorship.

What value has the mentorship program brought to you both personally and professionally?

Personally, it is gratifying to help women see dreams become reality.  I have sold my business and I’m retired, but I find my involvement has helped to keep me sharp and engaged.  Who knows, it’s never to late to start another business!

What growth have you seen in both your mentee and yourself throughout this program?

I have seen my mentee blossom as a communicator and counselor in a field she feels passionate about.  She has made amazing strides in getting her business started and the best is yet to come.  As for me, I am grateful to have been able to play a role in helping her.

What advice would you give to those interested in applying for this program?

Do it!  You will benefit in so many ways as it relates to business, networking and professional growth.  It is an amazing group of women.
